Risk of infection in the tourist paradise. Special warnings issued

Risk of infection in the tourist paradise. Special warnings issued

Spain's favorite tourist region isn't as ideal as it might seem. Catalonia, in particular, is plagued by a problem with animals carrying a dangerous disease. The situation is at its worst right now, with June, July, and August considered the worst months for infections.

Threat to tourists in Catalonia

Tourists frequently vacation in Catalonia, choosing the region for both city breaks and beach destinations. These include cities such as Barcelona , Girona, Tarragona, and Lleida. The entire region is divided into four provinces: Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona.

It's in these areas that you need to be wary of bats and other animals that carry rabies . Between January and July 29th of this year, 88 animal attacks were recorded in Catalonia alone, including 22 involving bats. Bats are considered the main carriers of this dangerous disease. Furthermore, recent data show that 21% of attacks posed a risk of infection.

Local authorities appeal

The Catalan Department of Health (Department de Salu) has issued a warning for tourists. It advises that infection can occur not only through bites but also through scratching or other close contact with the species. If such contact occurs, appropriate action must be taken.

"It is important that if you come across a bat, you do not touch it, even if it appears harmless or injured. In such a case, you should notify the authorities so they can deal with the matter," the statement said.

It also added that if a wound occurs, it should be washed immediately with soap and water and a doctor should be consulted. Affected individuals are typically given anti-rabies medication. It's important to remember that this is a dangerous, incurable, and fatal zoonotic disease.

When going on vacation to Spain, consider the dangers of animals, heatwaves, and fires . In many places, the situation is very serious.
