The hiking route to discover the source of this well-known Galician river

Galicia's natural beauty makes the region a perfect place for exciting hiking trails, so it's no wonder many in Spain travel to the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula to explore stunning routes and extraordinary landscapes. Among the countless trails that meander through Galicia, the spectacular Miño-Eo Route stands out, a bucolic journey through the Meira region, in the heart of the province of Lugo.

This impressive route not only connects two of Galicia's most important rivers, but, in addition to crossing their source, also passes through places of immense beauty that amaze all who pass by, from lush vegetation to beautiful waterfalls that only enhance the idyllic nature of the trail. Therefore, it is one of the best options in Galicia for hiking enthusiasts looking to take on a challenge.

The extraordinary Miño-Eo Route in Galicia

This magnificent 17.2-kilometer route begins about three kilometers from the town of Meira, specifically at the so-called Irimia rocky outcrop, the point where the source of the Miño River is located. After leaving the car and starting the route, the views will remain etched in every hiker's retina. Following the signs along the way, you'll be able to admire almost fairytale-like surroundings filled with trees such as oaks, chestnuts, and walnuts.

One of the route's highlights, worth stopping at for at least a few minutes, is the splendid A Mexadoira waterfall, tucked away in the Murias River . At 15 meters high, it creates a picture-postcard image that's hard to forget. Although access is somewhat complicated and entails certain dangers, it's well worth the effort to brave the descent to get close to it.

Continuing along the route, you reach the Eo River, where you can also see the A Treita power plant, another of the most interesting spots on this impressive hiking route. In addition to the magnificent landscapes seen along the way, some lucky ones will witness the enormous variety of wildlife that inhabits the area, from foxes and wild boars to various types of birds.

The Miño-Eo Route takes about five hours to complete, and due to its medium-high difficulty, it's not suitable for children or those with little hiking experience. However, for those less experienced hikers who don't want to miss out on all the charms of this impressive Lugo route, there are several alternative, less physically demanding trails .
