A revolution at European airports: Up to 2 liters of liquids in hand luggage

While this isn't about Polish airports, many Poles travel to Poland from these two cities and will pass through security without a fuss. At Birmingham and Edinburgh airports, you can take up to 2 liters of liquids in your suitcases and carry-on backpacks, instead of a maximum of 1 liter, in 100ml bottles. This is thanks to the installation of modern 3D scanners.
New liquid limit in hand luggage"Only liquids, pastes and gels in containers no larger than two litres (2L) may be carried in hand luggage. Larger containers must be carried in checked luggage," the Birmingham Airport website states. There is also no limit to the number of containers you can carry.
This means passengers can stow perfume, shampoo in large containers, a bottle of mineral water, or larger souvenirs like honey or a bottle of alcohol in their luggage. What's more, thanks to the new scanners, there's no need to remove electronic devices.
A similar provision can be found on Edinburgh Airport's website. "You can now carry up to two liters of liquids through security. Liquids can remain in your bag – there's no need to remove them," passengers were assured.
"A whole generation of travellers have only known the 100ml rule, so this is a truly groundbreaking day as we have become the first airport in Scotland to abolish this rule since it was introduced in 2006," said Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Scotland's capital city airport. Security queues will undoubtedly accelerate. However, it's still important to check the rules regarding carry-on luggage at your return airport.
Changes are also expected to be introduced soon at airports in Aberdeen, Bristol, London City, Newcastle and Teesside.
Last year, liquids regulations caused quite a stir – the UK briefly lifted the limit, but the European Commission reinstated a maximum 100ml limit on liquids carried in cabin baggage from September 1, 2024. EC spokesman Tim Phie emphasized that there were no security concerns, but there were technical issues with scanners at some airports.
