Lama Monachile beach, the most photographed queen of the Apulian coast

Lama Monachile beach, the most photographed queen of the Apulian coast

One of the most famous and photographed beaches in the Puglia region, Lama Monachile enchants those who follow social media and beyond. Nestled between two rocky cliffs just steps from the historic center of Polignano a Mare , its disarming beauty has captivated everyone. Picture-perfect? Even more so.

Lama Monachile beach in Puglia, with its crystal-clear sea and poetic soul, is sure to leave a lasting impression. It's not just its central location, just steps from the village, but also the spectacular Bourbon bridge that overlooks it, that makes it one of the most photogenic and social media-shared spots in the entire region.

Characteristics of Lama Monachile beach

Also known as Cala Porto, as soon as you set foot there, you understand why it's considered the undisputed queen of Polignano a Mare. Lama Monachile beach is small and made of smooth white pebbles , polished by the sea and perfect for sunbathing or simply enjoying the sound of the waves. The water is crystal clear with enchanting shades of turquoise.

The seabed tends to deepen quickly, and due to its rocky formation, it's suitable for those who are already comfortable swimming. Many know it for the international diving competitions held here: athletes from around the world compete annually from a balcony overlooking the sea. Diving from here isn't as easy as it may seem, so it's best to leave this adventure to those with good athletic training.

There are no beach resorts or umbrellas: Lama Monachile is a free, wild, and authentic beach . For this very reason, it's best to arrive very early in the morning, especially in high season, to find a private spot. And let me tell you: the early hours of the day, when the light is soft and the town slowly awakens, are the most poetic time to experience it.

Where is Lama Monachile beach and how to get there?

Lama Monachile beach is undoubtedly one of Puglia's most beautiful beaches, located near the center of Polignano a Mare . The bay, named after the bridge overlooking it, is a jewel in the ancient Via Traiana and one of the region's most photogenic spots.

The view? Truly evocative, with the sea lapping between the rocks, and paths behind it, the village's soul, and mysterious caves. Getting there is quite simple : just follow the path from the historic center toward the sea and there it is. If you're driving, however, you can park about 300 meters away and then continue on foot.

Access ? Simple yet scenic : a flight of steps near the ancient bridge takes you directly to the beach... or you can choose another path, descending from Via Conversano (a bit steeper, not recommended for those with mobility issues). There's no shortage of small cafes, ice cream parlors, and restaurants nearby, and one thing's for sure: this is one of Puglia's most beautiful beaches, even if it gets quite crowded in high season.
