Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York mayor, called for urgent infrastructure upgrades to New York City’s infrastructure after torrential downpours drenched the area on Monday evening.

Delivering nearly two inches of rain between 7 and 8 p.m. EDT, the rain resulted in the city’s second-wettest hour on record. Only Hurricane Ida in 2021 surpassed it, with 3.47 inches in a single hour.
