'I'm a travel expert - this stunning city bursts into life but without tourist crowds'

A travel expert has revealed where British tourists should go to escape the crowds this year. European cities and seaside breaks are popular trips for Brits to enjoy over the summer and throughout the year. Some areas of the continent are much more popular than others. Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Turkey are countries with resorts that attract a huge number of Brits every year. However, there are more underrated cities and countries to check out.
One expert has listed a European capital as the place to go to avoid crowds of tourists this year. More and more Brits are starting to discover many underrated destinations in Europe, including countries like Albania, Slovenia, and Malta. However, there are still some that have yet to be discovered. Joanne Lynn, a travel expert at European cruise and tour operator Riviera Travel, suggested going to places that haven't already filled up with tourists.
One of her top choices for a crowd-free break away in Europe is Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. "Summer is a busy time for travelling, and the popular spots quickly fill up with holidaymakers," she said. "An overcrowded destination can dampen the trip as you struggle to find space on the beach or a reservation at a desired restaurant, ultimately leaving you dissatisfied.
"Tallinn is an enchanting city full of colourful architecture, which comes to life during summer. Known for its historic old town and urban, picturesque landscape, this city among the Baltic states is ideal for those seeking a cultural getaway to a beautiful, low-key location.
"Wander through Tallinn’s vibrant Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you’ll stumble upon cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and historic landmarks that transport you to another era."
She added: "Explore the charming Medieval Lower Town and the hilltop Upper Town, and visit Kadriorg Park to admire the astonishing Baroque architecture of the Kadriorg Palace. Despite being an urban area, Tallinn’s proximity to beaches allows you to have a seaside holiday."
Tallinn is a relatively small city, with a population of under half a million. But size isn't always important, as there is still plenty to do here. On TripAdvisor, the top-rated attractions here are Tallinn Old Town, Toompea Hill and the Eesti Meremuuseum.
Additionally, the architecture here can be gorgeous, and there are plenty of museums where you can learn about Estonia's fascinating history.
"Tallinn is a really delightful city," said one TripAdvisor user. "It is definitely worth a visit, especially if you are fond of medieval architecture and like to lose yourself in romantic alleys that pop out onto beautiful parks and breathtaking views of the city towers."
Another shared: "You will spend hours here and you will constantly find something to be in awe of. Plenty of historical sites, restaurants and things to see and do. Such a beautiful city."
As well as city break experiences, Tallinn also has many beaches to visit. Notable ones in and near the city include Pirita Beach, Stroomi Beach, and Kakumae Beach.
There are direct flights between the UK and Tallinn. Flights are operated by Ryanair, Baltic Air and Wizz Air from London Stansted, London Gatwick, London Luton, Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh.
In terms of weather, conditions are a lot cooler in Tallinn than they are in places like Spaion and France, which would be a welcome change for those who want to avoid the 2025 heatwaves in parts of Europe. July is when it gets the warmest here, when temperatures peak in the low 20s.
