The beautiful town of Mallorca with a medieval castle and coves of turquoise waters

The island of Mallorca is a true paradise on earth. The largest of the Balearic Islands boasts a unique natural, cultural, and historical heritage, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean .
The area is perfect for rural tourism , with Valldemossa, Fornalutx, and Sóller being some of the most visited towns. However, if you're looking for a lesser-known but truly interesting town, Capdepera is a great option. Here, you'll find not only historic buildings like a medieval castle, but also a lively coastal area with beautiful beaches.
Capdepera and its fortressImportant remains from the Talayotic period have been found on the lands that now comprise the municipality of Capdepera, such as the Talayotic settlement of Claper des Gegants. The town itself was not founded until 1300, by King Jaume II. He ordered the construction of a church surrounded by a wall , to which the inhabitants' houses were added.

The jewel in the town's crown is its 14th-century castle , which once enjoyed a privileged strategic location, as it was "the best place to house and protect the 'gabellins' (Capdepera's adjective) during Berber sea attacks," according to the town hall. The fortress is built on a hill and offers impressive panoramic views of the inland areas and the sea. Here we can visit the Miquel Nunis tower , the cistern, the church and its terrace, the Governor's House, the wall and its towers, and the archaeological excavation area.
What to see in the municipalityOver time, the space provided by the walls became insufficient, so it expanded beyond the enclosure. Furthermore, in 1858, it gained significant importance when it became an independent municipality , separating itself from its neighbors Artà and Son Servera .

The coastal area of the municipality, Cala Rajada , has also progressed, as it went from being a small fishing village to becoming a very popular summer resort, in fact it currently receives a large number of international tourists. Growth increased thanks to the construction of its port , a picturesque space that is now full of bars and restaurants with views of the sea and the docked boats. In addition, we cannot miss its beaches and coves with turquoise waters , such as Cala Agulla, Son Moll, Cala Mesquida, Canyamel, Sa Font de sa Cala and Cala Gat.
A visit to the town can be completed with a visit to the Melis Cursach Center , an old house that belonged to one of Capdepera's most emblematic families, now converted into a museum and cultural center; the lighthouse located on a cliff from which Menorca can be seen on clear days; and the Canyamel Tower, of Muslim origin, which served as a refuge for the population in case of danger.

The drive from Palma to Capdepera takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes via the Ma-15.
