Renault 5 Electric 40 kWh, received 5 out of 5

TEST - The car of the year 2025 is now available in a more accessible version without losing either its power of seduction or its pep.

Aside from the crush, when it comes to car purchases, it's best to start from your needs. This is even more true when it comes to electric vehicles where the range, which many consider to be decisive, varies in particular depending on the battery capacity. After more than a year on the market, the Renault 5 Electric, voted Car of the Year 2025, is starting to come in a multitude of versions. The latest one lowers the price by €4,000 compared to the first 150 hp model coupled with the 52 kWh battery. Starting at €27,990 (excluding bonuses) in the Evolution trim, you can access the 40 kWh version associated with the 120 hp wound-rotor electric motor. An entry-level Five version (95 hp) is even listed in the catalog at €24,990. Some will still find the price steep, but to get below €20,000, you will have to wait for the new Twingo planned for next year.

With the R5 40 kWh, we find everything that makes this electric city car so special: an attractive face that brings back memories, remarkable ergonomics, decent roominess for its 3.92 m size, comprehensive equipment (provided you opt for the Techno finish at €29,990), more than sufficient performance - it only takes a second longer than the 52 kWh model to reach 100 km/h - and road handling that is all the more lively and exciting because with the small battery, the R5 loses a few kilos. Of course, if it cannot claim the same versatility of use as its big sister, making 100 km of autonomy, its 312 km of range allows it to meet most of the needs of daily use. Especially if you practice coastal driving by multiplying short trips and returning to its base to recharge.
