Perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature: a beautiful tour through an area of Transylvania surrounded by wooden baroque churches

Northern Romania hides one of the country's most important and attractive secrets: the wooden churches of Maramures. This is a rural area in the Transylvania region. Just a few kilometers from the Ukrainian border, life moves in slow motion, almost everything is done in a traditional way, and the surroundings invite you to relax and enjoy its charms. These churches date back to the 17th and 18th centuries and are an exceptional example of wooden religious architecture, which has been a tradition in the region for centuries.

World Heritage Churches

The wooden churches of Maramures arose as a result of the prohibition imposed by Catholic Hungarians on Orthodox Romanians from building religious buildings made of stone. The goal was to prevent the construction of churches that would endure over time and to impose Catholicism over the Orthodox religion. Therefore, these architectural works are more than just religious symbols; they represent the struggles of the Romanian people to preserve the Orthodox tradition and are well worth a visit.

Although there are an estimated 100 wooden churches in the Maramures region, only eight have been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999.

After five failed attempts, the rock finally remained standing, and the site of the religious fortification was established there.

The building is characterized by its roof divided into two distinct areas . Its style is a bit more rugged than the rest of the churches, and its interior displays several paintings from 1780 depicting the Last Judgment.
