One of Andalusia's best-kept secrets: a free natural water pool declared a Site of Cultural Interest

One of Andalusia's best-kept secrets: a free natural water pool declared a Site of Cultural Interest

Although some of Spain's beaches are considered among the best in Europe, the reality is that many people shy away from the sand and sea , even during the summer months, preferring other alternatives to combat the high temperatures. One of the most ideal options for cooling off is natural pools, and although there are many throughout the country, few can compare to the one located in the town of Cañaveral de León.

In this town located in the north of the province of Huelva, bordering Extremadura, lies the La Laguna natural pool, an ideal place for swimming during summer days, but one that holds much greater importance than some imagine. This hidden spot in the Sierra de Aracena has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) and is undoubtedly one of the best-kept secrets in all of Andalusia.

The La Laguna natural pool in Cañaveral de León

This wonderful natural pool, located right in front of the town hall, receives its crystal-clear waters from a spring that flows continuously, ensuring a stable temperature throughout the summer. Access is also completely free and there's no admission fee, making it perfect for cooling off whenever the heat takes its toll during the summer weeks.

If it's already an incredible place, its fascinating history makes it even more so. It's an ancient pool with centuries of history, made up of the Fuente Redonda (Redonda Fountain) , dating back to the Moorish period, the El Pilar irrigation canal , and the natural pool itself. Its importance throughout time has been key to the entire region; in fact, today it's one of the most popular tourist spots in the entire area.

Such is the value of this natural pool that it has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest, making it one of the great treasures of the impressive Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park. This makes it one of the best options for local residents to cool off without having to travel to Mazagón or one of the other well-known beaches in Huelva.

Cañaveral de León is located two hours by road from the city of Huelva, as it is located at the other end of the province. To get there from the city, take the H-31 and then exit onto the N-435, which you should continue on until you pass Zalamea la Real. Once through the town, turn onto the A-461, and at Campofrío, repeat the process via the A-479 and then the HV-3116 and HV-3124.
