Many of these rocks can be climbed on well-maintained hiking trails and offer spectacular views of the surrounding Elbe Valley. The region boasts not only scenic diversity but also historic sites, such as a medieval fortress that offers fascinating insights into times gone by. Here are the most spectacular spots for your trip to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

A particularly impressive excursion destination in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains is the so-called Kuhstall (Cowshed), the second-largest natural rock arch in the region. With its imposing dimensions of eleven meters high and 17 meters wide, the rock formation impresses not only with its size but also with its unique history. Legend has it that locals hid their cattle here during the Thirty Years' War—hence the unusual name.

But that's not all: Right next to the cowshed is a hidden entrance to the Ladder to Heaven – a narrow, steep staircase that leads through a narrow rocky cleft to a higher plateau. The climb may be challenging, but the reward is priceless. Once at the top, a magnificent panorama opens up over the surrounding rocky landscape, the Elbe River, and far into the Bohemian Basin.

The Bastei is undoubtedly one of the most famous and most visited sites in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains—and rightly so. The viewing platform, boldly built on a rock formation above the Elbe River, offers an unparalleled panoramic view of the Elbe Valley, Königstein Fortress, and the surrounding bizarre cliffs.

Particularly impressive are the three deeply incised Schrammtoren (Schramm Gates) – enormous rock crevices formed by erosion over millions of years, which still impressively demonstrate the power of nature today.
